Springworks Project (Working) Title: Changing Perceptions & Expanding Opportunities for Selling Culturally Specific American Media Content Abroad
Springworks Project Description: A common argument in the mainstream Hollywood film community is that American culturally specific film content – Black, Latino and Asian – will not sell abroad. Personal experience suggests that this belief is not necessarily true. The consumption of diverse types of music, food and fashion in many foreign countries suggests that with the appropriate cultivation of new relationships in international markets, culturally specific visual content can also sell abroad. My Springworks Project will explore and test whether there are indeed foreign markets that would consume culturally specific American content at levels to support a commercially viable business venture. Key steps will include examination and prioritization of potential markets, optimal distribution channels, technologies and formats, suitable genres, and ideally determining an appropriate business model that will result in actual ROI.
